The Royal Park Hotel Iconic Naha has launched “Ryukyu Experience,” a new cultural initiative centered on the traditional art of Ryukyu Bingata (Okinawan stencil-dyeing). Commencing July 10, 2026, the program offers international travelers a connection to a craft once reserved for the royalty and nobility of the Ryukyu Kingdom, characterized by bold pigments inspired by the island’s natural environment.

Deep Immersion into Ryukyu Bingata Tradition
The program is designed to move beyond passive observation, positioning the hotel as a conduit for regional heritage. Guests can explore the history of Ryukyu Bingata, a technique known for its vibrant colors and intricate patterns. The experience is offered through two primary paths: a specialized studio tour for deep historical insight or a creative workshop for practical engagement, both complemented by dedicated accommodation plans.

Exclusive Studio Visits and Hands-on Workshops
For those seeking historical depth, the Chinen Erythrina Dyeing Institute offers a rare look into the operations of one of Okinawa’s three historic Bingata families. Led by 10th-generation master Toma Chinen, the 60-minute visit covers the “color-making” and “color-inserting” stages. Each participating group receives an authentic Bingata art panel as part of the experience. This visit is limited to one group per session, and preschool children are not permitted.

Alternatively, the Gusuku Bingata Dyeing Studio provides an accessible, family-friendly workshop. Participants can dye their own tote bags using traditional patterns, guided by local artisans. This session includes snacks and focuses on the creative application of the craft’s signature motifs, providing a tangible connection to Okinawan aesthetics.

Sustainable Tourism Supporting Local Artisans
Realized in partnership with Kazetsuchi Co., Ltd., the initiative is part of the “THE Regional Story” concept, which aims to integrate hotels into the local cultural fabric. This framework ensures that tourism directly contributes to the preservation of Okinawan culture; a portion of the participation fees is dedicated to improving studio environments, specifically addressing the shortage of traditional tools. By linking stay experiences with these historic crafts, the hotel facilitates a sustainable cycle of cultural succession for future generations.
