ONSEN RYOKAN YUEN SHINJUKU to Introduce Hakone Hot Spring Suites

ONSEN RYOKAN YUEN SHINJUKU has announced a significant expansion of its facilities, introducing private hot spring suites and dedicated family rooms to its urban ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) concept. The development aims to meet the increasing demand for group travel and high-end privacy within Tokyo’s central district.

Private Hakone Onsen Experience in Shinjuku

While the property’s 18th floor has long featured a communal open-air bath, the new ONSEN Suites will offer guests the ability to bathe in authentic volcanic spring water within their own quarters starting November 16, 2026. The water is transported directly from Hakone’s Ashinoko Onsen Tsutsuji-no-Yu. The suites are designed in the koagari style—a raised floor area where guests remove their shoes—and utilize natural plaster and lattice walls to create a restrained, modern Japanese aesthetic.

Expanded Accommodations for Families and Groups

In response to the rising trend of multi-person stays, the hotel will introduce Family Rooms inspired by traditional tea rooms. Scheduled to open in March 2027, these rooms range from 38 to 49 square meters and can accommodate up to four guests. The design includes dedicated spaces for luggage, addressing a common logistical challenge for international groups traveling with multiple suitcases.

Dining Renewal and Integrated Design

The hotel’s culinary program is also undergoing a transition. Following the closure of the existing restaurant, Kakatojo, in May 2026, a new dining venue is set to open on the first floor in November 2026. This renewal is being managed in-house by UDS, covering everything from planning and construction to operations. The project utilizes QBLE, the company’s specialized construction team, to ensure a cohesive integration of the new spaces with the existing architecture.

A Modern Reimagining of the Japanese Ryokan

Since its opening in 2019, ONSEN RYOKAN YUEN SHINJUKU has focused on distilling the essential elements of the ryokan experience—seasonal hospitality, traditional aesthetics, and hot spring bathing—while adapting the service and layout for contemporary urban travelers. The addition of these suites and family rooms represents a further refinement of this model, providing a quiet retreat within the dense urban fabric of Shinjuku.
