ABBA RESORTS IZU – Zagyosoh to Debut Poetry-Themed Guest Rooms

Located within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, ABBA RESORTS IZU – Zagyosoh has announced a significant expansion of its South Building. Scheduled to open in July 2026, the project introduces six new guest rooms centered on the concept of “a journey through Japanese culture led by poetry.” The interiors seek to translate the works of legendary poets Kakinomoto no Hitomaro and Yosa Buson into physical spaces, using specific color palettes and curated artworks to bridge historical aesthetics with contemporary luxury.

Family Maisonettes Inspired by Manyoshu Poetry

Four new Family Maisonette rooms draw their creative direction from the waka poetry of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, a prominent figure in the Manyoshu, Japan’s oldest poetry anthology. These two-story accommodations are designed to host up to six guests, making them suitable for multi-generational travel. Each room—named Botan, Fujibakama, Mokusei, and Rindo—is themed around natural phenomena described in the anthology, such as the movement of stars, the rhythm of waves, and the clarity of moonlight.

Suigetsu Villas and the World of Haiku

Two exclusive Suigetsu Villas have been developed with inspiration from a haiku by the Edo-period poet and painter Yosa Buson. Named Chikuran and Tsukimisou, these villas focus on the evocative themes of bamboo groves and the “misty moon.” Designed for two to three guests, the villas emphasize a sense of stillness and seclusion. Like the maisonettes, these units include private rotenburo (open-air baths), allowing guests to experience the seasonal air of the Izu peninsula in private.

Integration of Traditional Artisanal Crafts

The renovation serves as a showcase for regional and national craftsmanship. Guests will encounter sashimono (traditional joinery), intricate kimono fabrics, and Suruga Take Sensuji Zaiku—a refined form of bamboo craft native to Shizuoka. These artisanal details are woven into the furniture and wall treatments, providing a tactile layer to the literary themes. By incorporating these heritage crafts, the resort aims to provide a deeper immersion into the cultural fabric of Japan beyond mere decoration.
