Tracing the Sugar Road at Hotel Nikko Huis Ten Bosch

A Culinary Journey Along the Historic Sugar Road

From June 1 to November 30, 2026, Hotel Nikko Huis Ten Bosch will host “Afternoon Tea ~Sugar Road~” at its Japanese restaurant, Ajisai. The theme pays homage to the Nagasaki Kaido, a historic trade route known as the “Sugar Road,” where sugar and Western confectionery culture first entered Japan during the Edo period. This limited-time experience invites guests to explore Nagasaki’s unique culinary heritage through a curated selection of sweets and savory dishes.

Three Tiers of Nagasaki-Inspired Sweets and Savories

The afternoon tea is presented in a traditional three-tier jubako (multi-tiered lacquerware) box, with each level representing a different aspect of Nagasaki’s history: the evolution of sugar culture, traditional sweets, and the influence of “Nanban” (Western) culture. Highlights include Sonogi Matcha Gateau Chocolat, loquat macarons, and okoshi (crispy rice sweets). The savory selection features a creative “Turkish Rice Burger”—a handheld version of a local Nagasaki favorite—along with smoked Sonogi salmon and seasonal vegetables served with Shimabara miso.

Local Flavors and Traditional Craftsmanship

The experience is elevated by its setting, featuring the traditional beauty of Mikawachi porcelain. Guests can pair their meal with a variety of premium beverages, including local Sonogi green tea, Sonogi Japanese black tea, and a selection of Ronnefeldt teas. The afternoon tea is available for 5,000 JPY per person, including tax and service charge, and requires a reservation at least three days in advance.
