Deep-Sea Maturation: Okinawa Prince Hotel Launches Undersea Spirit Aging

Starting September 1, 2026, Okinawa Prince Hotel Ocean View Ginowan will introduce a specialized activity allowing guests to age awamori—Okinawa’s traditional distilled spirit—beneath the sea. This experience utilizes the unique environmental conditions of the Ginowan coast to mature the spirit over the course of a year, resulting in a product shaped by the movements and minerals of the ocean floor.

Unique Underwater Maturation in Ginowan

In collaboration with Blue Farm Okinawa, the hotel utilizes a storage facility located two kilometers offshore at a depth of 21 meters. This deep-sea environment provides ideal conditions for spirit maturation: stable water temperatures, a complete absence of ultraviolet light, and subtle vibrations caused by ocean currents. Over the course of twelve months, the bottles undergo a physical transformation as calcareous algae and shells naturally attach to the glass. This process creates a distinct, organic aesthetic, ensuring that each bottle retrieved from the Ginowan sea is visually unique.

Tailored Diving and Snorkeling Experiences

The program is structured as a year-long experience, encouraging guests to return to the property to retrieve their matured spirits. Participants can choose from five distinct plans based on their level of comfort with the water. Options range from full delegation, where professional divers handle both storage and retrieval, to active diving for license holders who wish to personally place or recover their bottles. Those participating in the diving or snorkeling trips visit the “Janabishi” area, a designated conservation zone known for its vibrant coral reefs. Licensed divers can access the pyramid-shaped artificial reef to interact directly with the storage site.

Exclusive Hotel Dining and Lounge Pairings

To complement the marine activity, the hotel’s All Day Dining Jinon offers Sakimoto Shuzo “Roughly Filtered 44-degree” awamori, specifically selected for pairing with its buffet offerings. Guests returning to retrieve their matured bottles after one year are invited to bring them to the restaurant to celebrate the completion of the aging process. Additionally, the Club Lounge UMIKAJI provides themed cocktails for club floor guests, including the “Coral Martini” and the “35 Marine Espresso,” both designed to reflect the hotel’s coastal setting and the spirit of the undersea project.
