Oriental Hotel Okinawa to Launch Ryukyu-Style Malatang Hot Pot

Oriental Hotel Okinawa Resort & Spa is set to introduce a localized interpretation of the malatang trend at the gateway to Okinawa’s Yanbaru region. From July 18 to September 30, 2026, the resort will offer “Oriental Ryukyu Malatang,” a customizable hot pot experience that integrates the stimulating heat of Sichuan pepper with the unique seasonal ingredients of the island.

A Regional Evolution of the Malatang Trend

The offering at the resort’s Ryukahou restaurant reimagines the popular Chinese street food through a “Ryukyu Chinese” lens. The experience allows guests to navigate a spectrum of flavors, balancing the traditional numbing heat of malatang with the aromatic and medicinal profiles characteristic of Okinawan cuisine. This seasonal menu is designed to provide a nourishing dining option during the peak summer months.

Signature Ryukyu Medicinal Soups

Supervised by a specialist in medicinal cuisine, the experience features two distinct soup bases. The “Mala Soup” utilizes a rich stock of Yanbaru chicken and beef tail, while the “Paitan Soup” is a creamy broth simmered for two days using chicken bones and scallops. Both bases are enhanced with local Okinawan spices, including island chili, piparchi (island pepper), and gettou (shell ginger), creating a multi-layered fragrance and a refined heat.

The dining format is highly interactive, featuring a buffet-style selection of over 50 ingredients. Guests can tailor their bowls with daily-sourced Okinawan vegetables, various fish cakes, and multiple noodle varieties, including healthy glass noodles. Premium additions include local Agu pork, Okinawan Wagyu beef, and fresh seafood, allowing for a highly personalized meal that highlights the agricultural diversity of the northern Okinawa prefecture.
