OMO5 Otaru and Nikka Whisky Launch a Sensory Night Lounge

OMO5 Otaru by Hoshino Resorts has announced a collaboration with Nikka Whisky to launch a sensory night lounge experience starting September 1, 2026. Located in the historic port city of Otaru, the initiative pairs the region’s renowned distilling heritage with local craftsmanship, inviting guests to explore the nuances of Japanese whisky through scent and light.

Discovering Personal Favorites with the Whisky Aroma Guide

To assist guests in navigating the complexities of spirits, the hotel has introduced a “Whisky Aroma Guide” at the OMO Base. This station allows participants to explore five distinct aromatic profiles, ranging from the brightness of fruity pear to the sweetness of vanilla, each resulting from specific aging and production methods used at the nearby Yoichi Distillery.

As guests identify their preferred scents, they record their impressions in a provided “Aroma Note.” This document serves as a personal reference for later in the evening, providing clues that help guests select a specific whisky or cocktail that aligns with their olfactory preferences when they visit the night lounge.

Exclusive Nikka Whisky Cocktails and Sweet Treats

The experience continues at the Tomoru Otaru Night Lounge, where the menu has been curated in partnership with Nikka Whisky. A centerpiece of the collection is the “OMO Amber Melon,” a cocktail utilizing Single Malt Yoichi. The drink is designed to balance the characteristic smokiness of the peat with approachable, vibrant flavors.

For those seeking a dessert pairing, the “Adult Whisky Affogato” offers a customizable tasting. Guests select one of five premium spirits—Taketsuru Pure Malt, Single Malt Yoichi, Single Malt Miyagikyo, Nikka Session, or Nikka Coffey Malt—to pour over cold ice cream, allowing the heat of the whisky to interact with the chill of the dessert.

Illuminating the Night with Original Oil Lamps

The ambiance of the lounge is defined by original oil lamps created by KIM GLASS DESIGN, a local Otaru studio. These glass pieces are bespoke creations modeled after the iconic silhouettes of Nikka Whisky bottles. When a guest orders from the Nikka Whisky menu, a lamp is brought to their table, casting a flickering light that reflects Otaru’s history as a city of glass and lanterns.

This collaboration celebrates the proximity of Otaru to Yoichi, the birthplace of Nikka Whisky, while highlighting the artisanal glasswork that remains a hallmark of the city. The warm glow of the lamps enhances the historic architecture of the lounge, providing a quiet space for guests to reflect on the day’s travels.
