A Solo Hot Spring Retreat at Kissho Yamanaka along the Kakusenkei Gorge

Kissho Yamanaka, situated along the scenic Kakusenkei Gorge in Ishikawa Prefecture, has introduced a specialized solo travel plan designed for those seeking a quiet, self-paced retreat. This program caters to various travel styles, from traditional restorative stays to modern workations, allowing guests to experience the natural beauty of the 1,300-year-old Yamanaka Onsen district at their own leisure. The experience includes access to private baths, nightly traditional performances, and a range of complimentary hospitality services characteristic of the region.

Mindfulness and Traditional Hospitality

Beginning in April 2026, the resort has expanded its wellness offerings with a Mindfulness Retreat program. This initiative includes rooftop yoga sessions at dawn or dusk, stargazing opportunities, and access to a stone sauna for physical detoxification. Guests can also participate in the resort’s signature hospitality, which features a daily happy hour with local sake and cocktails, evening Kaga pudding, and a selection of over 400 yukata (light cotton robes) to wear during their stay.

The culinary experience focuses on seasonal kaiseki (traditional multi-course) meals served at the restaurant Benihana. The menu highlights regional specialties such as Jibuni (a traditional duck stew from Kaga) and fresh seafood sourced from the Sea of Japan. For a more casual afternoon, the Kaga Afternoon Tea provides freshly prepared pancakes, which can be enjoyed while overlooking the surrounding forest greenery.

Explore the Culture of Yamanaka Onsen

The resort’s location provides direct access to the cultural landmarks of Yamanaka Onsen. Guests can walk along the Kakusenkei Gorge, famous for its rock formations and seasonal foliage, or visit the shops on Yuge Street, known for traditional Yamanaka lacquerware and Kutani porcelain. To facilitate unencumbered exploration, the resort supports the “Kaga Hands-Free GO” service, which delivers luggage directly to the station.

Accessibility to the region has been enhanced by the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, making the hot spring district more reachable for international travelers. During the evenings, the resort hosts Yamanaka-bushi performances, a traditional local folk dance and song that reflects the deep cultural heritage of this Ishikawa enclave.
