Yamanaka Onsen, a destination historically favored by the haiku master Matsuo Basho and the artist Rosanjin, serves as the setting for a deep exploration of Kaga culture. The resort Kissho Yamanaka has introduced a special summer plan, available through September 2026, that integrates this historical legacy with the region’s renowned traditional crafts and gourmet heritage.

Retrace the Steps of Basho and Rosanjin
The cultural journey begins with a walk along the Yuge Kaido, the town’s main street, leading to the Basho-no-yakata museum. Housed in the oldest example of ryokan (traditional inn) architecture in the area, the museum displays haiku-related materials and works by Living National Treasure Ryozo Kawakita, a master of Yamanaka lacquerware. Guests can use a provided city walking pass to sample local treats and visit public onsen (hot spring) baths while exploring the town’s historical landmarks.

Exquisite Kaga Cuisine and Traditional Crafts
Dining at the resort is centered at the Kaga Ryotei Chihiro, where the multi-course kaiseki menu features "Rosanjin-style" sukiyaki. This preparation uses soy sauce and mirin to enhance the natural sweetness of the meat without the addition of sugar, reflecting the artist’s own culinary preferences. The meal is accompanied by 180ml of "Shishi-no-Sato," a local sake brewed in the region.

The plan also encourages hands-on engagement with Kaga’s artistic traditions. Guests receive discounts for local craft workshops, including wood-turning for lacquerware and the creation of Kutani ware pottery, allowing them to produce their own pieces under the guidance of local artisans.

Complimentary Hospitality and Mindfulness Retreats
The stay includes the resort’s signature "Kissho Omotenashi" services, such as Kaga pancake afternoon tea served from 14:00 to 15:30 and nightly Yamanaka-bushi folk performances. A new "Mindfulness Retreat" program, commencing in April 2026, offers rooftop yoga sessions on weekend mornings, workshops in mizuhiki (decorative cord) craft, and evening stargazing.

Located along the Kakusenkei Gorge, the resort provides direct access to scenic walking paths and the kawadoko (riverbed terrace) cafe, where guests can enjoy sweets while overlooking the water. The combination of natural scenery and cultural immersion defines the seasonal experience at this Ishikawa retreat.
