HOTEL THE MITSUI HAKONE to Debut in December 2026

HOTEL THE MITSUI HAKONE is scheduled to open on December 15, 2026, in the lush surroundings of Hakone Kowakudani. This property marks the second flagship for the brand, following its debut in Kyoto, and is a collaboration with Marriott International’s Luxury Collection. Situated within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park on a 14-hectare site that once housed the Mitsui family’s villas, the resort is designed to integrate seamlessly with the natural terrain, characterized by a 45-meter elevation change and old-growth forests.

A Legacy of Landscape and Architecture

The hotel’s concept, “Embracing Japan’s Beauty,” is reflected in its architectural response to the dramatic topography of Hakone. The grounds are home to diverse flora and fauna, which the property aims to preserve and highlight through its design. By positioning the structures to follow the natural contours of the land, the resort offers varied perspectives of the surrounding forest and the Jakotsu River.

Private Onsen and Refined Accommodations

The property features 126 guest rooms, including expansive villas and a 217-square-meter Signature Villa. Each room is equipped with a private natural onsen (hot spring bath) supplied by on-site springs, allowing guests to bathe in privacy while overlooking the greenery. The interiors, conceived by design firm Yabu Pushelberg, utilize 6-meter-wide openings to dissolve the boundary between the living space and the landscape of Mount Sengen. For those seeking traditional craftsmanship, the “Shikian” annex was built using sukiya-style techniques—a refined architectural aesthetic—by Yasui Moku Koumuten, the firm known for its work on the Katsura Imperial Villa.

Gastronomy and Wellness by the River

The culinary offerings are centered around “SANKEI,” a Japanese restaurant directed by Michelin-starred chef Hiroyuki Kurosu and led by Executive Chef Hiroshi Takahashi. The venue provides kaiseki (multi-course haute cuisine), sushi, and teppanyaki. Additional dining options include “RIVERINE,” an all-day dining space focused on locally sourced grilled dishes, and “The Bar LAMBENT,” which serves premium Japanese whiskies in a space defined by intricate wood lattice work. The wellness program is anchored by the Thermal Spring SPA, where guests can experience a communal bathing area that connects the indoor environment with the sounds and views of the Jakotsu River.
