Autumn Sunrises and High-Altitude Coffee at Unkai Terrace Tomamu

In the central highlands of Hokkaido, autumn brings a distinct clarity to the air and a shift in the solar cycle. As the sun begins to rise later in the season, the timing aligns with the early morning operations of the Unkai Gondola at Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU. This convergence allows visitors to witness the “magic hour,” a brief period before dawn when the sky transitions through a spectrum of deep lapis lazuli and vibrant crimson, often suspended above a dense unkai (sea of clouds).

The Spectacle of the Magic Hour

Located at an altitude of 1,088 meters, the Unkai Terrace provides a vantage point where the crisp morning atmosphere enhances visibility. During the Unkai Terrace Exploration event held throughout September, a limited number of guests receive priority access to the gondola. This allows for the selection of prime viewing positions across the terrace’s various observation structures before the sun breaks over the horizon, illuminating the rolling clouds in golden hues.

Scientific Brewing at 96.4°C

The experience is complemented by a specific approach to coffee, dictated by the physics of the mountain. At this elevation, the atmospheric pressure causes the boiling point of water to drop to approximately 96.4°C. According to international brewing standards, this temperature is optimal for extracting the natural sweetness of coffee beans while minimizing bitterness. Guests are invited to grind their own beans to prepare the “96.4°C Unkai Blend Coffee,” a medium-dark roast developed in collaboration with Miyanomori Alchemist Coffee. The service includes baked sweets, providing a sensory anchor to the high-altitude environment.

Navigating the Cloud9 Observations

The terrace features a series of architectural installations known as the “Cloud9 Plan,” designed to offer diverse perspectives of the landscape. To assist in navigation, the resort provides an “Unkai Terrace Exploration MAP.” Curated by staff who monitor the terrace daily, the guide highlights specific “secret spots” that showcase the contrast between the white cloud formations and the surrounding mountains as they begin their autumn color transition. This allows visitors to find a solitary space to experience the mountain breeze and the morning light.
