Northern Flavors: Yokohama Bay Sheraton Hosts Hokkaido Summer Fair

Yokohama Bay Sheraton Hotel & Towers has announced the “Summer Hokkaido Fair Northern Hokkaido ~Rumoi/Soya~,” a seasonal culinary event at its All Day Dining Compass. Running from July 11 to October 16, 2026, the fair focuses on the bounty of Japan’s northernmost reaches. The menu features an order-style buffet with ingredients selected by the hotel’s culinary team, emphasizing the specific regional profiles of the Rumoi and Soya areas.

A Culinary Journey to Northern Hokkaido: Rumoi and Soya

The fair highlights the unique geography of the Soya and Rumoi subprefectures, regions known for cold-water seafood and rugged coastal landscapes. A centerpiece of the menu is the mizudako (giant Pacific octopus) shabu-shabu, a dish originating from Wakkanai. This preparation involves briefly swirling thin slices of octopus in a hot broth to achieve a tender texture. The restaurant, located on the hotel’s second floor, provides a modern setting for this regional exploration.

Seasonal Seafood and Regional Specialties

The seafood selection includes Hokkaido natural bluefin tuna, Funka Bay yellowtail, and snow crab. Sushi is served using red vinegar rice, a traditional touch that complements the freshness of the nigiri. Beyond raw preparations, the menu incorporates regional influences into cooked dishes such as “Tako-meshi Paella,” “Sweet Shrimp and Hera Crab Americaine Spaghetti,” and “Hakodate Onuma Beef Ishiyaki Steak.” For those seeking local “B-grade” gourmet items, the fair offers Tomamae mizudako frankfurters and Hokkaido soup curry.

Special Campaigns and Family Summer Activities

The event includes several timed promotions, including a start-up campaign from July 13 to July 17 where weekday lunch guests receive a plate of red-fleshed melon and dinner guests receive a themed drink. During the peak summer weeks from July 18 to August 23, a dedicated kids’ corner allows younger guests to assemble their own kakigori (shaved ice). The venue also hosts a merchandise section featuring “Kyun-chan,” the official Hokkaido tourism PR character, allowing guests to purchase regional souvenirs alongside their meal.
