Customizable Summer Rice Bowls at Hotel New Otani Makuhari

Hotel New Otani Makuhari has announced a seasonal lunch concept at its Japanese restaurant, Senbazuru, allowing guests to tailor their meal through a selection of mini-donburi (rice bowls). Available from July 16 to August 31, 2026, the “Okonomi Don Gozen” menu features a diverse lineup of ten varieties, ranging from traditional seafood to meat-centric options designed for the summer months.

Personalizing the Summer Rice Bowl Experience

The core of the offering is the ability for diners to select two mini-donburi to create a personalized gozen (set meal). This summer, the kitchen has introduced three specific “stamina-boosting” bowls intended to provide energy during the humid season. These include a Beef Tongue and Tororo (grated mountain yam) bowl with green onion salt sauce, and a Japanese-style Summer Vegetable Curry Bowl that utilizes dashi (soup stock) to infuse the spices with traditional depth.

Stamina-Boosting Flavors and Regional Influences

A highlight of the seasonal rotation is the Grilled Eel (Unagi) and Tororo Bowl, specifically timed for the Doyo no Ushi no Hi (midsummer day of the ox) tradition. Starting August 9, the selection expands further to 11 varieties with the introduction of Lu Rou Fan, a Taiwanese-style braised pork rice. This version features Chiba Prefecture’s own “Boso Pork,” slow-simmered in authentic Kinran soy sauce for a rich, savory profile. These new additions join established favorites such as Sea Bream with Sesame Sauce, Tempura, and Negitoro (minced tuna and green onion).

The Premium Kiwami Lunch Selection

Under the direction of Head Chef Kenichi Hiruma, the restaurant offers two tiers of the set meal. The “Kiwami” (Premium) version is priced at ¥7,000 and includes a suite of high-quality accompaniments: Saikyo-yaki (miso-marinated and grilled) silver cod, crispy tempura, and smooth Tamajimushi (savory custard). For those seeking a lighter alternative, the standard set is available for ¥5,000 and is served with mini soba noodles, a small side dish, pickles, red dashi soup, and a refreshing sorbet.
