YOKI MATSUSHIMA to Bring Slow Luxury to the Miyagi Coast

Situated on the shores of Matsushima Bay, recognized as one of Japan’s three most celebrated views, YOKI MATSUSHIMA is scheduled to open on August 10, 2026. The property introduces a concept defined as “Slow Luxury,” a departure from material excess in favor of deep relaxation rooted in the regional landscape and traditions. As a member of the “Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club,” the area provides a backdrop for a stay focused on the quiet passage of time and a connection to the wider Tohoku region.

A Philosophy of Local Focus

The hotel operates as a “Local Focus” hub, actively collaborating with regional artisans and producers to integrate the heritage of Miyagi Prefecture into the guest experience. The interior design reflects this commitment through a modern Japanese aesthetic, incorporating motifs of the moon, pine trees, and the bay’s iconic islands. Public spaces, including the lobby and lounge, are designed to facilitate a sense of calm, utilizing natural materials and fire elements to ground the architectural experience in its coastal setting.

Immersive Regional Experiences

Beyond the guest rooms, the property offers a series of programs designed to connect travelers with the land and its history. Cultural workshops allow guests to try their hand at Sendai Tansu metalwork—traditional cabinetry hardware—or experience wearing samurai armor. For a different perspective of the archipelago, hot-air balloon flights are available at sunrise just five minutes from the hotel. On the water, small boat tours explore the rugged coastline of Oku-matsushima and provide insight into the region’s earthquake recovery efforts. Staff-led guided tours also provide access to local landmarks, including the national treasure Zuigan-ji Temple.

Oceanfront Accommodations and Gastronomy

The 26 guest rooms are all oriented toward the sea, each equipped with a private onsen (hot spring) bath available in open-air or semi-open-air configurations. Culinary offerings center on “Wabi Shun Go” cuisine, a style that emphasizes the seasonal bounty of the Sanriku coast, particularly its seafood. Guests can also visit the bar lounge for Japanese spirits and tea, or book the Miharashi no Yu on the fifth floor, a private rooftop observation facility that includes a lying bath (ne-yu) for watching the sky and sea.
